  1. I think that the relationship of Ashmol and Kellyanne is not a normal brother and sister relationship. I don't think that Ashmol is in aware of his sister's situation. At first Ashmol's dad feels the same feelings as Ashmol, but then his dad changes his mind. I believe that Ashmol should feel like him, too. The narrator is Ashmol. He is Kellyanne's brother. His sister has two imaginary friends named Pobby and Dingan. He lives in a town called Lightning Ridge. The interesting thing about him is that he doesn't show love to his sister, because his sister Kellyanne has a problem but he just acts like he doesn't care. The attitude that he has towards his sister is not a normal brother-sister relationship.

  2. My first reaction of this story is the sentence above the title was so accurate! It is imaginative, unexpected and touching written from the New York Times Book Review.I like the narroater which his name is Ashmol. He act as a big brother who always look after and correct his sister. It is just like a classic family in America. They live in a town, having two children and there is always some arguments among everthing. Everybody know each other and everybody treat other people nicely beside kids. The only thing which is unfarmilier and it is the main theme in this book is "my" sister's imaginary friend and what happend around them. How everybody in this little town lighting ridge change there opinion on Pobby and Dingan. It looks real and have something imagination in it, with this kind of mixture, it just let reader become interest on the book.

  3. I think the story is interesting because it was narrated by a little boy, and from the boy Ashmol’s view, I can touch a more real world because there are feelings, attitude, and opinions in his words. In Ashmol’s life, his sister seems like the center of family. Kellyanne had two imaginary friends Pobby and Dingan. In their family, everyone has different attitude towards Pobby and Dingan. As Kellyanne’s older brother, Ashmol was a boy who did not believe in those “imaginary stuff”, so he always made fun of his sister’s friends, and sometimes even wanted to “kill” them. However, his mom had a totally different attitude towards Kellyanne’s friends. She did not treat Pobby and Dingan only as image. In the chapter one, their parents had an argument, and their mom thought her husband was the reason why they lived in Lightning Ridge which was a very bad place, and her daughter was intelligent enough. As for the father in their family, his attitude changed through the process. Although Ashmol was older than Kellyanne, he was still a little boy who wanted others’ attention. In my point of view, he might want his sister to be as ordinary as him, and that is also one of the reasons why he did not like Pobby and Dingan that much.

    1. I agree with the opinions you wrote. Everyone in the family has a different point of view, so not everyone finds Pobby and Dingan situation normal, like Ashmol. I believe that mother is the one that changed the way of story goes, because she told the father to be more sensitive towards his daughter's situation. After that he encouraged Kellyanne that her imaginary friends are real and that's how other events happened.

  4. The first reactions to me is that the story started in the middle of something with no introductions, so it makes me a bit messed up in the beginning. However, after reading a few page of the book, I started to understand. The narroater's name is Ashmol, he lives in an ordinary family with a bit of unusuality, which is that he has an imaginary brother and an imaginary sister. His father did not accept the appearance of them but after a fight with his wife, he started to accepted them which is hard to believe. Ashmol is a kid that will never accept his "brother" and "sister", which made him a bit tough to survive in the family because the father was taking care of his "brother" and "sister" who never exists in my point of view. I'm surprised that with most of his family members accepting Pobby and Dingan, he does not. People always say that parents are the ones who affects it's child the most, but Ashmol did not.

    1. How did you see it is a boy and a girl? Interesting idea, and I think Ashmol live well in this town. At least he has friends, and in his family he has his own way of living. However I agree his idea of how do his father agree with his children.

    2. I don't quite understand your last sentence. Do you mean that he agrees that his father agrees him?

  5. My first reactions is this story is kind of weird because the book mention that everybody in the town recognition Pobby and Dingan is there, and the mother even leave Pobby and Dingan set when the meal time. Also I like that the narrator is Ashmol, which is not a main character or a adult.
The narrator is Ashmol, he is the elder brother in the family, there is six people in his family, which is his mother, father, sister Kellyanne, Pobby and Dingan, although he Pobby and Dingan are Kellyanne's imaginary friends. They live in a town because of his father's business is not very successful. The interesting thing is Ashmol is not nice to his sister or not believe in his sister's imaginary friends but he still can write in the way it's seem like he can see them. In addition I think Ashmol though he got a cold shoulder from his family, so in my opinion he is like kind of rivalry with Pobby and Dingan in order to get more attention and love from his family.

    1. I agree with your opinion, and I wrote the same one. Ashmol wanted more attention from his parents, and he was jealous of his sister. By the way, you have a wrong word, "though" should be " thought":)

  6. My first reaction to the story is that it is so interesting because I never have a imaginary friend before and I really want to know about it.
    Observations:
    1. Ashmol doesn't believe Pobby and Dingan are exist at all.
    2. Ashmol and his dad had the some opinion about Pobby and Dingan at first.
    3. Ashmol sometimes argue with Kellyanne about Pobby and Dingan.
    4. He sometimes annoys that Kellyanne mentions them a lot.
    5. He can't stand that their dad finally changed his opinion.
    They live in opal street.
Personally I think Ashmol doesn't have a imaginary friend in the past, and that's the reason why he doesn't believe it at all.

  7. My first reaction to the story is very sympathetic because I can feel Ashmol's feeling. I did not believe that the imaginary friend is not exist, but I started to believe them even though I was very young. Ashmol is a narrator. He is kellyanne's brother, and Kellyanne has two imaginary friend Pobby and Dingan. In addition, they are live in Lightning Ridge. My observations about the world of the narrator are Ashmol, a narrator, believe that his sister's imaginary friends are not exist, Ashmol does not elaborates his love and pretection for his sister. Also, Ashmol can not believe that his family started to stand at his sister's side. In my opinion, I do not agree with Ashmol because I had an imaginary friend when I was young and I can tell that imaginary friend will help Kellyanne so much.

  8. My first reaction to the story is that the author used a special point of view to write it, the first person narrator voice. I found that the family which includes Kellyanne, Ashmol and the parents(Maybe Pobby and Dingen.)aren't the fans of Kellyanne's imaginary friends, and Kellyanne is a really vulnerable girl. Her imaginary friends are like appear in everywhere. And however, some of the people do interact with the imaginary friends, I think that's fun. The narrator lives in the Opal Street, and I think he is a really good observer, and a person who wants her sister to be grown up.

  9. Blog 1: What are your first reactions to the story? List at least 5 observations about the world of the narrator. Who is his family? Where does he live? What is interesting, unique, and/or surprising about him?

My first reactions to the story is "It's interesting" on me.
    1. Everyone in her town act like that they can see the Pobby and Dingan except Ashmol and her
    Father
    2. Dingan had entered the Opal princess competition
    3. Lightning Ridge is a place which is full of holes and criminals and freaks
    4. Mum thought Kellyane believes imaginary friends because of the town
    5. We can know that Father drag his family to Lightning Ridge for something

Father, Mum, Kellyane, Ashmol, Pobby and Dingan
They are living in Opal mine, called Lightning Ridge
It is interesting that father's reaction of Pobby and Dingan. He didin't believe at all, but after fighting with Mum, he is acting as Kellyane and Mum. I think he is making a plot.

  10. My first reaction to the story is that I realize the narrator is talking about imaginary friends. The narrator’s name is Ashmol and his sister has imaginary friends named Pobby and Dingan. The imaginary friends and the way his sister treats them, drives Ashmol crazy! He also hates it when his father begins to pay attention to the imaginary friends. Ashmol gets mad that his father is paying attention to Pobby and Dingan and that there was no room in the car for him.
They live in a place in a mining town and his dad works in the minds to find opals. They are poor because he hasn’t found opals yet. Mom describes Lightening Ridge as a place with “holes, criminals, and freaks” (9).
The narrator is interesting because he is telling the story based on his feelings and his personal experiences. He doesn’t believe in imaginary friends, and he gets angry when his father changes his mind and starts to also believe in the imaginary friends.

  11. My first reaction to the story was couldn't understand them because I couldn't understand them throughly. However, as the strory went on I could understand them little and little and really feel like Pobby and Dingan are real character. Because eveyone except Ashmol accept Pobby and Dingan like real people. There are 6 people in the family including Pobby and Dingan. In the family, there are his mom, dad, Kellyanne, Pobby and Dingan and himself. They live in Lightning Bridge, Austrailia. Something that surprise about Ashmol is that even though he disagrees with imaginary friends, it feels like he can still see them.

  12. For the first reaction to the story, I think this is a kind of story which full of imagination and it is unrealistic. Just in my opinion, I felt that Ashmol is pathetic and lonely in the first chapter. The world of the narrator was entirely different from ours. In his world, Pobby and Dingan are not existed. However, most of the people around him had talked to Pobby and Dingan, prepared food, and took bath with them. For example, his mother and his father. The other thing I observed in the first chapter is that Ashmol's dad wanted to find opals in order to become rich. His sister's name is Kellyanne, who has long blond hair and won third prize for opal princess competition. She had her best friends, Pobby and Dingan, but she did not get well with her real friends. His family member was his dad, his mum, and his sister Kellyanne. (And Pobby and Dingan) He lived in Lightning Ridge. And the interesting thing about him is that only he said Pobby and Dingan did not existed in the first chapter after his Dad completely changed his attitude to Pobby and Dingan.
