Blog 2: Pobby and Dingan

Blog 2: (NOTE: For this blog you will have to read about one page aloud).

Chapter 2 moves the plot forward. What happens? What do you notice about the narrator's use of the word and, particularly on page 20? Read this page aloud as though you are an actor performing a monologue. Comment on the experience of "playing" Ashmol. How does performance help you to understand his character?

  1. In chapter 2 Ashmol’s dad takes Pobby and Dingan with him while Kellyanne is at school. Ashmol thinks that the reason why his dad does this is because he is trying to keep Pobby and Dingan away from Kellyanne. One afternoon while Ashmol’s mother is still working, Kellyanne finds out that Pobby and Dingan aren’t at home. Ashmol, his dad and Kellyanne goes out to look for them. While they are searching Ashmol’s dad gets angry and starts to search with anger and search for them at Old Sid’s camp. Old Sid gets angry and he says that he already called the police, so the police comes. The police takes Ashmol’s dad and Ashmol and Kellyanne walks home.
On page 20 the narrator, realizes that her Pobby and Dingan have caused a serious problem about his dad, but he is unsure if they caused the problem or not since they are not real. The narrator becomes more sensitive towards his sister (on page 20).
The performance helped me to understand Ashmol better since I can understand the words that Ashmol used better. When I read them aloud I could put myself to place of Ashmol. I felt that on page 20 Ashmol has a confused attitude; he doesn’t understand what’s going on to his dad and also to his sister.

  2. Chapter 2 has huge differences from chapter 1. To summarize the story that happened during chapter 2, Rex(Ashmol’s dad) took Pobby and Dingan to old Sid’s claim in order to separate Kellyanne from them, so that she can concentrate in class. However, he had forgotten about them and Kellyanne let him to bring her to the claim. When they were looking for Pobby and Dingan, Sid saw Rex and he thank Rex came to steal his opals and called the police. Finally, Rex was arrested and put in to the prison. In my opinion, narrator had used the word and for many times because he wanted to emphasize what happened after his father got arrested. Also it is more poetic if narrator use the word and in the last paragraph. After I acted out the page 20, I felt that he was really concerned about his parents, and he was confused about how imaginary people could be the fault for all of the things that happened. I think his attitude and behavior was kind of calm and mature.

  3. In chapter 2 everything changed. The narrator's sister lost her imaginary friends because of there father. Also because they went to look for the imaginary friend their father have some argue with Old Spit. This argue caused their father become a criminal and went to prison. The using of and connects every single event. It brings a lot of information in one sentence. In page 20, the using of and performs what this event brings. How this event affect their family and themselves significantly.
Performing Ashmol help us understand more detaily what Ashmol is thinking and what he is doing. Also, the part of "I fell asleep." is the part which I think about it most... After thinking about so many important thoughts, he slept...he just slept...... It proofs although he thinks a lot, he is still a teenager. It really let me understands him.

  4. There's a big difference between chapter 1 and 2. In chapter 2, dad took Pobby and Dingan out and Ashmol thought dad do this only because he want Kellyanne forget about them and focus on other things. But he forgot to take them back to Kellyanne, so dad took Kellyanne and Ashmol out in the afternoon to find Pibby and Dingan in Old Sid's camp. However, Old Sid thought dad was a thief, and called the police. On page 20, I noticed that "and" mad every single sentence be together. After I read aloud, I realized how much Ashmol hate the fact that Kellyanne believe she has imaginary friends.

  5. There is a difference between chapter one and chapter two, for me it looks like the dad is not really accept that Pobby and Dingan are truly real, he is going to keep Kellyanne away with Pobby and Dingan, so when Kellyanne go to school, Ashmol's father took Pobby and Dingan out to Old Sid's camp. But somehow, he forgot to take them back, so after Kellyanne back to home from school, she cannot find Pobby and Dingan, then her dad just realizes that he didn't take them back, then he bring Ashmol and Kellyanne go to find them. After they got there, the Old Sid thought the dad is a thief and called the police.
In page 20, Ashmol was get really confused because he doesn't who the fault it is.

  6. the narrator's sister lost her imaginary friend and there father don't want them to find that and get angry. On page 20, he notice the serious problem of his dad and but he don't know what's going on to his sister and his father

  7. What happened was that Ashmol and Kellyanne 's father took Kellyanne's imaginary friends outside but "lost" them, and Kellyanne would not give up searching for them, and that's how they got into troubles. And I think Ashmol's voice had became a little bit sympathetic on page 20 and sounds not that strong. The performance gets me know what the scenario is like at that time.

  8. In this chapter, Ashmol's father lost pobby and dingan with himself drinking too much beer. Because Ashmol's sister is really anxious so they have to go out and find them. Which it's impossible. In page 20, Ashmol's word start to be more calm than before and I can feel the situation. As I try to play the role of Ashmol, I couldn't find any tone to express his feeling at that time other than talking with a really low volume of voice. I believe you can feel the situation too.

  9. In chapter two, Ashmol's dad and Ashmol tried to separate Pobby and Dingan from Kellyanne but lost them at Old Sid's camp but Kellyanne tried to find them but she couldn't. So, Ashmol's dad tried to help her but Sid saw Ashmol's dad and thought of him as the one who stold the opal and he called the police and he got caught. When I read the page 20 aloud, I could really understand how Ashmol felt confused.

  10. In chapter 2, Kellyanne lost her two imaginary friends Pobby and Dingan while she is at school because her father takes Pobby and Dingan with him to keep them away from Kellyanne. However, Kellyanne finds out that her imaginary friends are not at her house. Therefore, Kellyanne, Ashmol and their father go out to search for Kellyanne's imaginary friends. While they are searching for Kellyanne's imaginary friends, her father gets angry but he try to looking for her imaginary friends for Kellyanne. However, Sid called a police while Ashmol, Kellyanne, and father were finding her imaginary friends at sid's camp because sid thought they are thief. On page 20, Ashmol realizes that Kellyanne's imaginary friends cause a bad problem for his father and also the narrator still does not believe that there is no imaginary friend. In addition, Ashmol became more sensitive and angry at Kellyanne on page 20, either. I think I have being more sensitive and like a teenager because I still think that Ashmol is young and not grown up yet. Moreover, I think he is worrung about his father, too.

  11. In page20, Ashmol used a lot of "AND" to describe how things happened after his dad was taken away. The first paragraph was focused on his mom, those "and" showed that she did not want her kids to be scared, but at the same time she was also very panicky. In the second paragraph, Kellyanne went into Ashmol's bedroom and told him her friends might be dead. Ashmol's thought was important there. He was really confused, and I can clearly felt that after my experience of "playing" him. When I read that part out loud, I felt that he did not know what to do, and his mind was chaotic. Therefore, I think that those"and" also sped up the story, and made everything flurried.

  12. In Chapter 2 dad takes the imaginary friends with him to work at the mines so that Kelly didn’t take them to school.
But, Pobby and Dingam don’t come home with Dad…and Kelly can’t find them
She makes dad go back to the mine (They take Ashmol too.)The police came and take Kelly’s father to jail. (Old Sid called the police saying the Ashmol’s dad was stealing from the workers at the mine).
Kelly is more worried about her imaginary friends and about her father.
They walk home form the mine and mom says that it will all work out…but Ashmol is not sure it will.
Ashmol fell asleep thinking that how this whole thing could be Pobby and Dingam’s fault when they’re not live people?

  13. The first part of plan had worked because some sort of general and shouted that they are searching for Pobby and Dingan as hard as they can (6 hours). It makes Kellyane talked as many that they heard after Pobby and Dingan disappeared.
However at the end of chapter 5, his plan is totally failed, because she is very ill.
