The Aquarium, by Aleksandar Hemon

In "The Aquarium," Hemon describes feelings of expansion and, alternatively, compression. For example, he describes the period after Isabel is diagnosed as after: "spreading out, like an exploding twinkle star, into a dark universe of pain." Give another example of expansion and/or compression. Think about Ella's experience, as well as the narrator's. Consider the source of the title: "The Aquarium."

  5. Another time, she told me, “I don’t want to die.” Not so long ago, she started talking to Teri, out of the blue, about wanting to hold Isabel’s hand again, about how much she missed Isabel’s laughter.

  6. If I were Bella, I feel stuffy as I sink in the sea. Because she was knowing about that Mingus is the imaginary friends, also she feels cogently about Isabell's death. So it is so sad for me

  7. An example of an expansion can be the time when Isabel died and Ella had an imaginary friend. The author states that while Ella's parents' world was being reduced, Ella's world was expanding. I think the reason why Ella's world was expanding is that Ella had imaginary friend who she was happy with. She was always making new stories about him while her parents' were sad about Isabel's situation. After this, the author mentions why the story is called the aquarium, because in an aquarium people can see what's inside and the ones that are inside can see outside, but no one lives in the same environment. It is the same situation for Ella and her parents. While her parents' deals with Isabel's situation, Ella is interested in her imaginary brother.

  9. "The comfort of routines belongs to the world outside." This is an example of compression, "Isabel had rashes and constipation, she was listless and weak, we were never able to tell her that things would get better." It makes me feel so sad about the fact that Isabel can't get better.

  10. In " The Aquarium," Hemon describes the details of his family. How her daughter collapse and how did her child how to find a imaginary friend. The imaginary friend expands his family and the reality is there family composes because a younger sister dies. The proof is one quote in text:" while our world was being reduced to the claustrophobic size of careless dread was dead, Ella's was expanding." According to the sentence before it must stands for her imaginary world. This is one theme I thought it was the main theme of the article.

  11. Just in my opinion, the title "The Aquarium" represented and implied the Ella's mental condition poetically. For example, "I don' t know what mental capacity is required for comprehending death, but Ella seemed to posses it. When we told her little sister had died, there was a moment of clear understanding on her face. She started crying in a way that could only be described as unchildlike, 'I want another little sister named Issabel.'" (The Aquarium, New Yorker) From this quote, we could know that Ella had a strong ability of comprehend death, just like an aquarium can contain water and variety of marine organisms. Also she lived in an environment just like an aquarium, impassive and quite, a completely different environment from healthy people.

  12. After it tells about her imaginary Alain brother, it says "While our world was being reduced to the claustrophobic size of ceaseless dread, Ella’s was expanding" which explains how she sees the world in a different view, which I never thought about it before. In our usual thought, we would never think about our world, that our personal world is small and has a lack of imagination, and we didn't understand their view of the world. We should always try to understand others even they don't think the same way as we think, but through their different view of world, we might learn something

  13. According to the passage, the author wrote: "While our world was being reduced to the claustrophobic size of ceaseless dread, Ella's was expanding." (Hemon, Aleksandar,The Aquarium) After Isabel was ill,the narrator who is also two girls' dad worried about his daughter's condition, and stayed in the hospital with her everyday. The connection between his life and the world was almost cut off by that catastrophe, so when he stared at those "free" people running on the street, he felt like he lived in the aquarium, which was different with the world outside. The aquarium, I think it is also a metaphor of the older daughter Ella's world, her parents were too busy to take care of her, so that Ella began to have a imaginary brother. However, while her dad's life was compressing, Ella created her own " aquarium" which was expanding at the same time.
