Blog 2: Lars and the Real Girl
How do others react to Bianca? What does this say about Lars' community? Are there other details from the film that support your assessment of the community? In other words, did you see evidence of the town's character before Bianca arrived?
The community that Lars live in is a community where everyone knows each other. For that reason Lars’ relationship with Bianca had spread out to everyone in just a few days. At first people were making fun of him and Bianca, but when Gus and his wife took Lars to the doctor they understood that Lars had a delusion and that they had to treat Bianca as she was a real person. So after that, most of the people who knew Lars closely (like his friends at work) started treating Bianca as a real person. I think that it shows how the people of the town are helpful, caring and kind. On the other hand some people didn't even help Lars. They made fun of him and were rude towards him and his family. I believe that it is so nice of them that they are helping Lars and his family to make Lars be better.
Hospital is where Bianca first shows up in the public. Gus and Karin want to take Lars to see the doctor, but they lie to him that it is because of Bianca. In the hospital, Bianca sits near Lars, and those people who sit in front of them seem extremely surprised. They are totally shocked by Bianca. When they are in the church, some people also react like that. Actually most people in the community can not accept her, and they think Lars is a psychopath. However, they are also some nice people and they pretend to regard Bianca as a real girl. It is because Gus and Karin have asked them to do so in order to help Lars get better. Therefore, I think the community is conservative but also kind in some ways.
Everyone in the community thinks that Lars is unhappy about his life and they all want to help him. They are all nice to him and they pretend that Bianca is a real person and that having her around is normal (even though Bianca is really a doll). Some of the reaction of the community to Bianca is that they act amazed and surprised about her. But then they become okay with her and they treat her normal. They talk to her and treat her like she is a person. Lars answers for Bianca because she can’t talk of course. Because the town acts this way it shows that everyone is helping each other – they are like a family. Everyone in the town is friendly at work and outside of work too.
Describe Lars' community. What is the reaction to Bianca? What does this say about the town? The reaction of Lars' community was the same as expected. When everyone in his community saw Bianca, they were all dumbfounded and pop-eyed. Although most of them though Lars was delusive and insane, some of the people have still helped Lars and Bianca, such as Dr. Dagmar, Karin, and Mrs. Gruner. For instance, when Karin talked to the people in the church, people said that Lars was crazy, except for Mrs. Gruner. She said Lars was a nice guy and he could depend on her. Later, when she saw Bianca, she send a bouquet as a present in order to welcome Bianca. In the other hand, the people who saw Bianca during the party thought that Lars was a weirdo, but I think this is the normal reaction when you saw people who have a girl friend made of plastic. Considering these reasons, I think the town was filled with nice person with good nature.
After people in the community knows about Bianca, at first, they thought Lars is strange and weird, but after a few days, some people are being really nice to her. For example, they found her job, they drive her to work and take her back, treat her as a normal girl, it shows that people are nice and friendly in the town.
I think Lars become much more talktive after Biance come. But at first, all the people in his community think he is strange and crazy. But they give respect to him and try to pretend that Biance is a real woman. They try their best to don't expose him. Although some people think he is crazy and can't understand him, many people make them treat Biance as a real woman. I think his brother's wife is very good that help Lars a lot. The doctor is also a perfect guy that know what happen to Lars.
The whole community shows a lot of love and forgiveness to the weirdness of Lars and they seem accept Bianca as the part of them, that's what I am really enjoy watching because the humanity from them just warm every audience's heart. For example, Almost all the people in Cindy's party try to talk to Bianca and help Lars, that's my favorite scene.
