Gathering of Pearls, Blog 2

What are 2 topics you should research as you continue reading this book?

  1. I think that the first topic I should research must be Korean and American traditions. Sookan is Korean and is having some hard times getting used to the American Culture. I believe that if I can research the difference between these two different cultures, I can understand what she's going through better.
The second topic can be researching schools like her school, all girls boarding school. I believe that I'm informed enough about boarding schools but I've never had an experience in an all girls boarding school before. I would do a research about that.

    1. Excellent topics, Sera. Look instead at women's colleges, rather than girls' boarding schools. You might also look at religious colleges.

  2. The two topics that we have to research for continue reading the book, I think one is the timeline of the book. This book is about her college life which is 1960’s. It is important to know what historical period is going on the book. For example at the first part of the book, narrator said that “I had never seen anyone embrace and kiss in public like this.”. Nowadays in Korea. there are many people are greeting each others like that. Therefore if we don’t know about the historical time of the book, we will feel little bit confused while we are reading the book.’
The second topic that we have to research is that understanding her circumstances. She is alone in America, she is poor at speaking English, and also in that time, there were not many machines to call or text to much far countries. Therefore, the things that going to happen, we should think about her circumstances that she feels so lonely and stressful. Even she is the only Korean in that college, so there is no one to talk her feelings.

  4. I would pick international students' experiences and the link between Korean and American culture as the two topics that I am going to research on. The author is just a boarding student as I am, so I know that those experiences can be benifited to both of us. And In order to understand better on her situation, I need to know better about her culture. I personally have a lot of problems because of the gap between different cultures, and I think it happens to her too.
In additional, there is another thing I am interested on, the college culture, because I don't know about college life very well. It is quite different from high school.

  5. The two thing I want to research is first, the time difference. Because Sookan came to study in a America in 1960s, but now is 2014, 50 years different. So on many aspects, it would be different between now and the past. For example, the transportation was not as convenient as now it is. The technology is not that good, Sookan couldn't communicate with her parents and friends very often, but now we can send messages at anytime. The second thing I want to research is the cultural difference between Korean and America. Sookan already faced a lot of problems because of the different culture in different countries.

  6. There are two main topics that I need to research as I continue reading this book. First topic is Korean culture and American culture because she might struggles with American culture before she adjust with American style life. Trying to adjust an American culture might be hard for Korean people because of the life style. Also, sje is from different coumtry which has completly different culture. Second topic that I need to research is American college life style and Korean college life style because I am pretty sure that they have different life style in the college. The reason that I am thinking that way is the food is different and the studying style is dofferent.

  8. The narrator (the person telling the story) in the book Me and You is a teenager name Lorenzo.
He’s a kid who is lying to his mother about his friends.
He went to private school until his parent made him go to the public highs school.
He hated it and never had any friends.
He is a very anxious person.
One day he was watching a show about a fly that pretended to be something else.
And Lorenzo knew he had to pretend to fit in at school – even though that was not him.
He pretended to be like all the other kids at school and he pretended to have friends.
It was important to his mother that he had friends so he made up a story that he was invited to go skiing – but he really was not invited on the trip.
He didn’t tell his mother the truth and he was worried about this.
He thought about telling his mother that he couldn’t’ go on the trip because his grandmother was dying, but then he couldn’t tell his mother that either.
So, he is hiding in a cellar for the week, pretending to be on the ski trip with his friends.

  9. In the book I think we should research the culture in America and Korea in1954. It is because the background at that time is very important to the main characters. The background can affect the characters' personality, social position, family situation, and also the relationship between people from two different country. Moreover, the school environment should also be researched. The Finch School would be where Sookan study and live for four years, it's environment decides how Sookan could improve herself, and the opportunities she could get.

    1. The two things that we need to research as we move further to the book is is the life of international students and the status quo. The reason why we need to research life of international students is because obviously sookhan is a international student and it would give a better understanding of her. Moving on, the status quo such as the time period or the place she lives in and etc... Would give us a better understanding of her life and her feelings
