What do you think about Sookan's decision to buy the black dress?
How does she feel about the decision? What does this reveal about her character? Do you think she made the right
choice?
I think she made a right decision to buy the black dress. It is because she had pushed herself too much on school work, and she deserved that as a little gift. Moreover, she bought that dress for her the first prom in America. She was not only a good student and a docile daughter, but also a beautiful teenage girl, and she should do something for herself. However, Sookan did not regard that dress as what she deserved. She felt guilty, and she thought it was her fault to sacrifice her family’s gifts for the dress. From this part of story, I found out that even though she started joining some social programs, family was still one of the most important factors which controlled her life.
I think the decision to buy the dress changed her very much. First, it changed her opinions about parties and drinks. She danced with a guy and she even drank alcohol. She had done things which she wouldn’t be allowed to do in Korea. Second, it changed her opinion about her sister and her mother. Because she spent all of her money on the dress, she started to think more if it was a good idea or not, so she started questioning her sister’s attitude towards her. After buying the dress, she felt really confused. She started to think more like Americans and kind of started to question her life in Korea. I think that she made the right choice because it showed her that her decisions matter, too. She spent the money for herself instead of her family which made her feel a little bit confused, since she was unsure about what her mother and sister would react to her.
I think she will buy the black dress, and that decision would have impact on her life. First, she was very tired of her courses which made her refuse the student council, and confused about thinking between Korea and America. Therefore, after she buy the black dress, she would change like Americans, so she would argue with her sister, like why you are asking like that questions? like this. Also, it is the first party (prom) in her life, so she was very expected about her first prom. Therefore, she will buy that dress to give present herself, for her works (studying).
Sookan has changed a lot after she goes to another country. The impact from American culture on her is massive. I personally agree with the idea of buying a dress like that, she has the power to dress herself up to face a more colorful life. Also, she is a grown young woman, her dicision is worth to respect. On the other hand, her experience before all this was not very "happy" to her, now she has the courage to stand up and trun into another girl.
I think she made the right decision to buy the black dress. For one reason, it is a gift for herself since she had been working really hard at school not only she studies but also she has to work during her free time. In this way, she deserve that dress. Also, there will be a prom in her school, she can wear the black dress to go to the prom. She deserve the dress anyway. So she doesn't need to feel guilty to buy the dress.
In my opinion, I think she made a good decision to buy a black dress. The main reason is that she can go to the party which is a prom. She had a lot of stresses from her studying and school life, so it is the time to release all of the stresses by enjoying the party with her friends. Also, Sookan will be happy if she goes to prom with the black dress because she knows that she is tired of study. Therefore, she should not be sorry to her family about buying black dress with her money.
In my opinion, I strongly believe that Sookan's decision of buying her black dress was one of the best decision that she had made so far. The first reason is that she is starting to adapt in American culture by attending to the prom and she is also relieving her stress and pressure that she had so far. Furthermore, in the prom, she is probably going to make unforgettable memories with her friends. Last but not least, now that she knows to relax and enjoy her life while she has her work done, she would probably live the rest of her life happily.

ReplyDeleteYou're absolutely right, Sera. This decision is a good representation of how Sookan has changed since arriving in the U.S.

So, how does she feel after she buys the dress? Does she argue with her sister? Has she changed? Is she "more like an American" now?
