Gathering of Pearls, Blog 11

What do you think of the ending? For a writer, the ending is often the most difficult part to write. Some people say that an ending should feel both surprising and inevitable. Does this ending fit that description? Is it a "feel good" ending? Is it more complicated? How so? Does it tie up loose ends, or does it leave things messy and unresolved?

  1. I believe that the ending of a book is the most important part of the book. In the Gathering Of Pearls the ending was a surprising ending, but I didn't find it strong. It didn't affect me after reading it. It wasn't a surprising and inevitable ending. I believe that the writer wants the readers to feel sad in the end. That's how I felt. I felt the sadness of Sookan. It leaves so many things messy and unresolved. Ending the book right after an important incident like that makes the reader curious about the rest of the book.

  2. I think the ending is pretty good. Although it made me feel sad about Sookan's fate, it also strengthened the personality of the protagonist. Sookan has changed a lot during her freshman year. From a girl who lived her life all around her family, to a student who started to fill her social life. At the end of this book, Sookan's mom died. That was a huge blow for her. I was a bit surprise at first. However, her mom's death did led Sookan to a more mature girl. She began to understand her sister, and figured out what she need to do in her future. Moreover, death also cut out a part of connections between Sookan and her family. She would not have much concern of her family's wish any more. Therefore, I argue this is a meaningful ending, for it not only shown the answer of her problem in the former passages, but also gave the readers some spaces to think deeply.

  3. My feeling of the ending is complicated. On one hand, I'm happy for Sookan because she had changed a lot during her first year studying abroad in an university in America. But on the other hand, I feel sad for Sookan's mom, Sookan must feel very bad when she heard the sad news from her sister. But it made Sookan became more strong. The ending left a lot of space for readers to imagine Sookan's future life in America. I think it is a pretty good ending, personally.

  4. I think the ending of this book is sad, and strongly impact on me. The death of Sookhan's mom was very surprised, and like me and she, the international students are very busy of our own life, so it is really hard to call parents and talking our daily lives. In this situation, if I heard my mom’s death, then I would go back to Korea and just do nothing, because of this kind of mind, the ending was very sad for me

  5. The ending is a little bit tricky for me, because it has some kind of potential connection to all of what happened before. Sookan got change after all, and the mother's death didn't kill her, I think it shows her grown-up personality. Everything is taking place surrunding Sookan's change.
The ending absolutely matches that sentence, and the sentence explains it so well. But, a lot of people might ask, what is it unevitable? Well, for me it is. I've been always looking for a big turning point in this book, and it never shows up until the end. The book can't just shows her "plain overseas life", there's must be something that happen and totally effect her. As I said, it's all about her "growth"
The ending, I will say it's not 100 percent bad though, because it's the invisible but existing symbol of Sookan's independent. It doesn't mess things up.

  6. I believe the ending of this book is the most important and sad part of this book. The reason is Sookan's mom die when Sookan was in the U.S.A. I can tell this ending is pretty strong enough because I can feel the sadness by reading the part which is about death of Sookan's mom. In addition, the ending absolutely surprised me, too. It did not leave messy and unresolved because the ending is pretty impact for me.

  7. The ending of "gathering the pearls" was pretty surprising and unexpected. After all the sufferings Sookan went through her mother passes away might be sort of a hint of her later life. The ending seemed quite confusing and irresponsible because it doesn't conclude to anything and that it was so random. I think that this ending will lead Sookan to be a step closer to a adult and to become more independent and strong. Furthermore, this ending might be a turning point of Sookan's life. To sum up, I think that though this ending is confusing, it is much more meaningful then it seems like.
