What conflicts does the protagonist face? How prepared is he/she to face them? Do you think he/she will be successful? Is he/she alone, or supported by others?

  1. The main conflict Sookan is facing is the cultural difference. There's a lot differences between Korean cultural and American culture. She is trying her best facing the problems and solve them. She often ask questions when she meet a problem. In this way, I think she will be successful, because she is solving the problems one by one. And also, she is not by herself, she has good friends to help her and her professors and her mom. Even her mom is far away in Korea.

  2. We can see her main problem clearly as the difference of Korean and American cultures. In this chapter she gets a baby sitting job from her professor. The biggest thing she is scared of is if the kids would like her, since there is a lot of difference between them. In the end of the chapter she is successful and she even gets flowers from her professor's family. I believe that her friends are really important supporters for her. Her roommate especially is trying to make her more socialized with more friends. I think that if she doesn't choose bad friends and keep up with these friends, she can be successful in the future.

    1. I think you're right that surrounding herself with good friends will be key to Sookan's success.

  3. The conflicts that main character face is the cultural differences, her homesick and pressure of her home. The cultural differences isn’t that big problems but she felt little bit awkward of America's cultural. For example, when she went to Professor Bennett’s house, she saw the professor is cooking, and it is different from Korean cultural. Also, when she was in the kitchen, she waited until the professor is seated.
I think her homesick and pressure of her home is the main conflicts to Sookhan, because when she got letter from her mom, she felt melancholy. Also, after reading her letter, she felt her mom thought that she will success in America, so Sookhan said, I have to work more harder to do not disappoint her mother. She knew that her home cannot send money to her, so she worked for Professor Bennett, so she can buy some books. Her older sister wants to get letter about Sookhan’s college life, but she is too busy that she have no time to write any letters. Therefore she felt sorry about her sister.

  4. In this chapter, Sookan faces a choice between looking after the kids and study. Finally, she decides to put all the school works out of her mind for a day, and focusing on playing with Sarah and Jemmy. That is a kind of recreation for her. I think she will be successful because she is a smart and sensible girl who knows what she should do in the college; she also understands how to adjust her time for work. Furthermore, there are many people stand with her and give her support, such as her family, and her friends Ellen and Marci.

  5. In this chapter, Sookan had to face the problem of not having enough confidence because of the unknown environment of her new job - baby sitting for her professor. At first, she didn't prepare well because things were so unfamiliar for her, but actually she opened her mind and fit into her work sooner, and people were nice and tried to help her, especially the professor, and he even drove her back home. There are a lot of difference between her and American culture, for example, men don't cook in Korea but it's opposite in America, thus she is still trying to learn everything. There's another thing that is confusing her, handling the college life as well as take care of her job, but since her friends and other people are great helpers for her, I think she will be better soon

  6. In my opinion, I think sookhan's main conflicts are confidence and the pressure. The confidence is not a big problem because this is her first year in the U.S. and if she spend more time with her friends and classmates, she will get more confidence and not being shy. Also, her roommate is her big supporter because her roommate is helping her to make more friends and relationships. However, education pressure from her family is really big problem because education pressure will never be gone before she adapt the American education system. American education system is completely different from Korean education system. In addition, her family is not rich, so Sookhan's needs to work for her college tuition, and living expenses. I think Sookhan's will be successful soon when she spend more time in the U.S.

  7. The problems that she is facing are having a hard time to adapting in America, budget, and homesickness. First of all, she is having a hard time adapting to American culture because she is a Korean and they have different cultures and customs in Korea. Moving on, she is having a finance problem as it was referred in the previous chapters. Last but not least, she is homesick. It was referred that she missed home and her mother because now they live far away from each other. In my opinion, I believe that sookhan would be successful facing these problems because she has some good friends and her homesickness could be a motivation to work harder for better results because it should be worth for facing these problems.
