Choose a short section of the text (about a page) and write a detailed
response that addresses its significance within the novel as a whole.
Think about the choices the author makes (word choice, paragraphing,
etc.). What purpose does this section serve?

ReplyDeleteIn page 25-26, starting with "The door opened onto a large, rectangular room... "to "This would be my ski week."(Ammaniti, 26) This short section indicates the setting of the story. A room where ski week begins. Words describing the environment of the room create a picture in readers mind. Also word choice lie "two small windows veiled with dust" make readers think about a room have never used by a person. Also the lass sentence "this would be my ski week"(Ammaniti, 26) ends this section. It make readers curious of what will this kid and why will he do this? In conclusion, this section make the setting, brings the main argument and attract readers.

ReplyDelete“I started talking when I was three years old. Small talk has never been one of my strengths.” From this sentence by Lorenzo, it tells that Lorenzo doesn’t like to talk a lot even he started to talk when he was 3, that really surprised me because a normal baby should start talking around one year old. He even only answer yes no or I don’t know when somebody he doesn’t know is talking to him. That shows he is the one who is kind of escape things, especially on interpersonal communication. That tells why the story happened, and match with Lorenzo doesn’t have friends, and he doesn’t want to go skiing with the other and even didn’t tell her mother that he doesn’t want to go. There is another quote “Lorenzo, you’re like a cactus: you grow without bothering anyone, you just need a drop of water and a bit of light.” From an old nanny. I think this is very interesting because the nanny put it in a positive way.
At the beginning of Ch.5, the protagonist got up in his cellar. I could tell he didn't shower for days because he mentioned that his armpits were holding up for now. It tells the reader he doesn't really care how others think about himself. Also he doesn't really care of how himself is going to be because he dodn't care if he had a cold shower, or even he stank. I could see why he couldn't make friends or people around him doesn't want to hang out with him expect his parents.
ReplyDeleteI chose the section from “I threw myself on to the bed, ski boots and all, feeling like someone had dumped a ton of rubble on me, and I realised that I had no idea how to get out of the mess I had created and that if I tried again, even just once, to believe that Alessia had invited me to go with them...", until "How could I get out of this? My lie was driving me insane. And suddenly I saw the cellar. Dark. Welcoming. And forgotten.” (Ammaniti, 43) For this section, the author used variety of detailed descriptions for Lorenzo's feeling and behavior, and I think It is an essential paragraph to represent the personality of Lorenzo, which did not show up before this paragraph. Moreover, this paragraph shows both pros and cons of Lorenzo's mental condition, and the last sentence offers an imaginary space for readers.
ReplyDeleteI chose a section from chapter five when Lorenzo finds the letter that Olivia wrote to her dad. This excerpt is little too long so I will bring only the important parts. "... You never liked me, I annoy you. ... Maybe it's because I'm living proof of a relationship gone wrong and each time you think of me you're reminded of your shitty marriage to my mother. ... Maybe if I'd contact more often, if I'd tried to break down the wall that separates us, maybe it would have been different... I was thinking that if I had to write a book that tells the story of my life I would call the chapter on you ' Diary of a Hatred.' " This excerpt really shows how much Olivia hates her dad and how he helps her. It also shows that she is really struggling with her dad. I chose this section because I thought that middle of the chapter having a whole page a written letter was very weird. Usually, other books doesn't really do that. Also, something that was especially interesting about this letter was that Olivia expresses how much she hates her dad but in the end she thanks him for helping her but she doesn't want his help anymore. I found this really odd.
ReplyDeleteOn page 142 and 143 Lorenzo’s sister finds a record player in a red suitcase and she takes out a record and begins to play it. Olivia is singing and dancing and she is happy like Lorenzo has never seen her before. Olivia wasn’t listening to anything that Lorenzo was saying she was just “swaying and singing softly”. Then Olivia grabs Lorenzo’s hand and makes him dance with her. He felt uncomfortable but then he also began to dance. He hates dancing but he didn’t want that moment him his life to change. This feeling had never happened to him before, it was an unusual feeling – “it took his breath away” and he did not want it to end. Lorenzo says that in a few hours he knew that everything might go back to the way it was. But this is an important turning point in his mind and in the book – because now Lorenzo has decided that he is ready to face the world. “I would be able to talk to others like I was actually one of them. I couple leave.” Lorenzo is ready to leave the cellar and face whatever comes next with the others. He has more confidence in himself because of what has happened to him and he is ready to see what comes next in his life.
